Featured Artwork: Mountain Song
Acrylic on canvas, 24 x 30 inches
By Christopher Leeper
Christopher Leeper created this painting in response to the Benedicta Enrile Masterworks Series – In Nature's Realm. Mountain Song will be featured during the final concert of the season: Brahms, the Sea and Mountain.
In Mountain Song, Leeper explores the visual and elemental connection between the sea and the mountains. A waterfall springing from a rock formation became the conceptual anchor for the piece, reflecting the path of spring rains and snowmelt as they travel from mountain peaks to rivers and, ultimately, to the sea.
The design challenge was to capture the size and grandeur of the mountains while also creating an inviting space. Leeper achieved this by choosing a gap between rock formations, opening the scene into deep atmospheric perspective and inviting the viewer to step into the landscape.
He drew inspiration from the German composer Brahms, imagining what his experience in the mountains might have been. The landscape is based on the Alps and is informed by the works of 19th-century painters such as Bierstadt, Payne, and Compton, known for their lavish and sublime interpretations of nature.
Leeper constructed the composition using several images of the Alps, intentionally enhancing the colors and forms to heighten the drama. Personal interpretations and details bring the scene to life, evoking both emotional depth and a sense of wonder.
