Stories from the East is the first program in a three-part masterwork series that connects audiences to different cultures through symphonic music and fiber art. The stories featured on this program are from Middle Eastern and Far Eastern cultures. The Arabian Nights and Butterfly Lovers, a Tang Dynasty Chinese folk tale similar to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, are brought to life through the music of Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Chinese composers Chén Gāng and Hé Zhànháo. These tales have transcended time and space and inspired these composers to weave music styles from Eastern and Western cultures.
